As with many things which have stood the test of time, the origins of panforte are somewhat legendary. Some claim that the delicious concoction was created by an inventive nun, who having extra flour, spices, almonds and candied fruits left over, decided to use those ingredients to prepare food for the poor. According to another legend crusaders carried this “strong bread” in their saddle bags on their journey to the holy lands. What appears certain is that panforte was first produced in mediaevel Siena around the beginning of the 13th century, and has become a favourite throughout Italy ever since.
